For as long as there have been mothers, there have been celebrations of mothers. Some of the earliest documented celebrations include ancient Roman and Greek festivals, which honored the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. Early Christian festivals closely resemble Mother’s Day as we know it today. “Mothering Sunday” took place on the fourth Sunday of lent and started out as a special mass. Eventually, it led to a ceremony where children gifted their mothers with flowers and presents.
Anna Jarvis was a driving force behind Mother’s Day as we know it today. Anna lost her mother Ann Reeves Jarvis in 1905. In 1908, she encouraged the holiday to be called “Mother’s Day,” rather than “Mothers Day,” as a way to emphasize how families should celebrate their own mother, rather than all mothers in general.
By 1914, President Woodrow Wilson passed a law that made Mother’s Day a national holiday. Being a mother is a full-time job with no days off, but having loving and caring children makes every day worth it.
