March 20 is National Ravioli Day. Ravioli is a beloved dish by pasta lovers across the country. In a survey performed by The National Today, 87 percent of 2,000 Americans said they liked ravioli. Of these people, 8 percent (or almost one in 10) said ravioli was their favorite food. Cheese is the most popular ravioli filling, but many people also said sausage, chicken and cheese, lobster, and spinach and cheese were their favorite fillings.
Ravioli can be a quick lunch or a fancy dinner. Pre-made ravioli only takes minutes to heat up, while homemade ravioli is a fun way to get hands-on with your cooking. There is no wrong way to enjoy ravioli.
The first mention of ravioli was in the 14th century. Francesco di Marco Datini, a Prato merchant, wrote about ravioli in personal letters. Also in the 14th century, King Richard II’s chefs mentioned ravioli in a British cookbook.
